New York's Fracked Ban

New York’s Fracked Ban

New York's "ban" on fracking has predictably ended up in a kind of regulatory Catch 22. The state regulatory agency has updated its environmental regulations that could be used to permit HVHF (horizontal shale) wells, but it has not updated the regulations that would govern the drilling of such we… ...

Climate Change IQ Test By Region

Climate Change IQ Test By Region

Belief in climate change turns out to be directly proportional to the percentage of respondents that completed the 8th grade. And inverse to the belief that the first cowboys rode dinosaurs. If your idea of a “hot date” is a first cousin, the odds you believe in climate change drops into the single digits. In the winter, when it’s cold, FOX barking heads don’t believe in climate change. Climate Change Beliefs on a Local Level New study creates thin slices of data on people’s attitudes toward climate, could be a boon for policymakers. By John H. Cushman Jr., InsideClimate News Apr 6, 2015 A new study assessing local climate beliefs found that in the District of Columbia, 81 percent of people believe climate change is real. The other 19% are […]

Who Funds EDF (Environmental Defense Fraud) Research?

EDF Sparks Mistrust, and Admiration, With Its Methane Research Environmental Defense Fund fills a void in tackling critical climate issue, but to some, its collaboration with fossil fuel industry taints findings. By Lisa Song and Katherine Bagley Apr 8, 2015 The Environmental Defense Fund is one of the nation’s most venerable environmental organizations, and many consider it one of the most effective. But its industry-collaborative approach to the study of methane leaks in natural gas drilling has drawn scrutiny from other environmental groups, who worry EDF has strayed into a gray area where science and the fossil fuel industry collide. Those concerns stem from an ambitious project EDF embarked on in 2011, as an oil and gas boom swept the U.S. While environmentalists have increasingly called for an outright ban […]

Man Wins Right To Sue Enbridge After Getting Sick

After a man who lives right next to the Kalamazoo River got sick when the Enbridge oil spill happened, he sought out to sue the company. A lower court tossed the case out and said there was no direct link between the Enbridge spill and the man’s health. The man got sick when the oil spill happened. He ended up coughing and throwing up so much that he says he suffered an avulsion of his short gastric artery that led to internal bleeding. Since he was never formally examined by a doctor, the lower court dismissed the case. Now an appeals court says a jury should decide whether Enbridge is responsible for the man falling ill. However, the dissenting judge believes the jury won’t be able to decide fairly […]

Frack Fluid Facts

Fracking fluids contain potentially harmful compounds if leaked into groundwater April 8, 2015 Summary: The organic chemicals in fracking fluid have been uncovered in two new studies, providing a basis for water contamination testing and future regulation. The research reveals that fracking fluid contains compounds like biocides, which are potentially harmful if they leak into the groundwater. The authors behind the new study say it’s time for the relatively new science to catch up with the extensive public awareness. They say an increasing research focus on contamination from fracking fluid will lead to more attention and regulation in the future.Share This The organic chemicals in fracking fluid have been uncovered in two new studies, providing a basis for water contamination testing and future regulation. Radonland: Fracking Radon

The Marcellus shale is particularly rich in radium and radon. Solution mining it via high volume fracking is tantamount to mining radium and radon. Increases in radon are now so common in Pennsylvania that even the EPA is proposing to do something about it. Fracking Link? High Radon Levels Found in 300,000 Pennsylvania Homes April 9, 2015 - Levels of radon, an invisible, odorless radioactive gas, have been rising measurably in Pennsylvania since the controversial practice of fracking started there, researchers reported Thursday. The study cannot directly link fracking with the raised radon levels. But whatever is going on, residents need to be aware of the rising levels of the gas and take action to get it out of their homes, the researchers say. Radon levels were higher in homes […]

Let's Please Stop Shooting Black Folks

Despite the fact that I am a white guy, most of the people that raised me, including my nurse, Trudy Miles, were black. I grew up in the Deep South, where all of the family retainers, including the maids, yard men, butlers, chauffeurs, maitre d’s, waiters, etc. were various shades of brown. So, as a child, I bonded to black folk. They were the most compassionate, friendliest, devout and hard working people I knew. While other white kids listened to the Four Seasons, I listened to Ray Charles and Lightnin’ Hopkins. While other white kids grew up with Ozzie and Harriet, I grew up with Amos ‘n Andy, Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben. On Saturday night, I went to “wrasslin’” matches with black folk. On Sunday morning, I went to […]

Fracademic Don Siegel Turns Out to Be a Frackademic

Turns out that Professor Don “Rocks for Jocks” Siegel was getting paid by Chesapeake and his co-author worked for Chesapeake (and still does) when they couldn’t find any leaky wells in the dataset that Chesapeake gave them - of wells drilled before Chesapeake started drilling leaky wells - along with other frackers. Which calls the veracity of his work into question. Imagine that. Why are we no longer incredulous about the mendacity of these flaming gasholes ? Fracking Study on Water Contamination Under Ethics Review Chesapeake Energy paid undisclosed fees to the lead author, whose study was based on water samples provided by the company. By Neela Banerjee, InsideClimate News Apr 6, 2015 A Pennsylvania resident ignites the tap water in her kitchen. A new study now under question says that methane contamination […]

Bush 3.0 Thinks He's TexMex ?

A just another Bush poser. Or just another Bush idiot. History repeats itself, the first time as tragedy, the second as fracking farce. Behold Bush 3.0, the third Hispanic candidate for President - after Cuban-Canadian Ted Cruz and Marco “where’s the water bottle” Rubio. Democrats quickly pounced on former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s (R) voter registration snafu by telling the likely presidential candidate, “You should call your lawyers.” Since lying on that form is illegal. You know, like when his Mexican wife got caught by US Customs for smuggling. On Monday, The New York Times reported that Bush listed himself as Hispanic on his 2009 voter registration form. Double Denial: Climate Deniers Deny Being Deniers

This conservative group is tired of being accused of climate denial — and is fighting back. By Tom Hamburger, Joby Warrick and Chris Mooney April 5 at 4:00 PM Follow @thamburger Follow @jobywarrick Follow chriscmooney Facing a loss of high-profile corporate sponsors, a conservative state-level policy group — the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) — threatened action in recent weeks against activist groups that accuse it of denying climate change.   Attorneys for ALEC sent letters to Common Cause and the League of Conservation Voters asking them to immediately “cease making false statements” and “remove all false or misleading material” suggesting that ALEC does not believe in global warming. The activist groups refused the request, saying ALEC’s advocacy of legislation on climate issues and its public discussion of the topic support […]

Science in the Hot Seat: When Science Loses Its Objectivity

Journals And Publication Pollution Denialism By News Staff | April 3rd 2015 01:55 PM |   The scientific community is facing a ‘pollution problem’ in academic publishing, one that poses a serious threat to the “trustworthiness, utility, and value of science and medicine,” according to Arthur L. Caplan, PhD, director of the Division of Medical Ethics in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Medical Center. That is a maturity issue. While open access - freeing publicly-funded research from copyright corporations and allowing the public to read the results they paid for with taxes - was hailed as a good thing, early on there were concerns that once it became popular, separating the good from the bad would be difficult. When open access publishers became corporate juggernauts in their […]
