On December 12, 2012, Dory Hippauf gave an excellent presentation at the regular meeting of the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition (Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition Luzerne County PA HOME). In it she profiled the money-soaked and influence driven connection between the gas industry and its sponsors in and out of government. She included the history of Energy in Depth: (Connecting the Dots: The Marcellus Natural Gas Play Players – Part 3).
Joe Massaro, one of EID’s “field director” hit-men was at the GDAC meeting, and he filmed the entire presentation-presumably to write a hit piece on Dory, just as he has on me (Wendy Lynne Lee: Activist, Professor and Now a Fiction Story Teller | Energy In Depth – Northeast Marcellus Initiative) to go with Giles Howard’s hit-piece on Alex Lotorto (Who Is Alex Lotorto, Well Street Occupier? | Energy In Depth – Northeast Marcellus Initiative), to go with Bill DesRosiers’ on Duke Barret (Citizen’s Commission Stacks the Deck to Scam Pennsylvania Residents | Energy In Depth – Northeast Marcellus Initiative), to go with Nicole Jacobs on Scott Cannon (Talk About A Loose Cannon on the Marcellus Shale Deck! | Energy In Depth – Northeast Marcellus Initiative). EID has a special place in its otherwise frozen heart for GDAC-a place called fear.
But a week has now passed-and nothing. Indeed, Massaro behaves as if he wasn’t even at the meeting. Why? There’s only one reason: once you see the connections which gave birth to EID, you cannot but draw the conclusion that EID is absolutely nothing but a well-paid stable of charlatans for the fracking industry. Their aims, however, are not merely the promotion of fracking for natural gas; their aims are to try to silence the opposition through a smutty and slutty combination of personal attack, ridicule, question-begging, straw fallacy, and plain fabrication.
They hire a few willing women on their hit-squad to help green wash and gender-sanitize EID’s promotion of an industry that’s responsible for the pollution of air and water, and they recruit as many folks willing to sell out grandma’s and grandpa’s farmland as they can (Green-Washing and Gender-Sanitizing Fracking: Rachael Colley and Nicole Jacobs of Energy in Depth).
But they can’t touch Dory. Were Massaro to even try and write that hit-piece, he’d have to put up the video he took of the presentation. He’d have to honor his promise to GDAC that he’d put it up unedited. And he can’t do that without EID being exposed as the mercenary industry weapon that it is. And lots of us would know immediately if he doctored that video at all. We were there.
We know the whole dirty, profiteering story behind fracking. We know the lies about the safety, the benefits, and the jobs. Joe Massaro knows it too.
So, sorry Dory! It seems you’re not going to get the “I’ve been slammed by EID” award-yet. EID can’t trash you without embarrassing themselves beyond recovery.
A silent “pretend it didn’t happen” Joe Massaro is all you get.
All the while, corporations like, say, Exco, Calfrac and Oakley and Minuteman just keep on fracking up the promised land.

I was really looking forward to seeing the tall tale creativity EID would fabricate to get to Dory. I guess it’s not going to happen. Sooo disappointed. Maybe next time? Keep on doing what you’re doing…..BOTH of you…….and all who have been “hit”. Expose and state the truths and realities of this filthy, greedy Industry, along with the BS of EID!
Please don’t tell me that nitwit, Joe Massaro, is the only person who recorded Dory’s presentation! I have been waiting to see this since I heard about it the day before and just couldn’t make the trip across the state to see it. Am I really dependent on the whims and “promises” of a gasshole?

I have not had a chance to write a piece up yet due to my very busy schedule. Unlike your piece Dory’s was not full of assertions and opinions, everything that was presented is public information. So, I applaud her for her ability in that regard.

That you cannot tell the difference between opinion, informed opinion, and analysis does not make my work “mere” opinion. I challenge you to show what in any of my posted essays is false and/or poorly reasoned. However, it’s not enough-as you apparently think here-to simply claim that something is false and/or poorly reasoned. You have to SHOW it via the clear presentation of reputable counter-evidence and/or a spelling out of the fallacies I have committed. Every fact I solicit is verifiable public information. Indeed, I-unlike many of the EID self-appointed hit-squad-make all of my sources and my name public, and I-unlike EID and its members-use reputable sources.
You applaud Ms. Hippauf for using publicly available information. How delightful. But fact is you can’t dispute the fact that the entire EID enterprise is to promote natural gas extractionregardless evidence for or against it as safe.
The EID hit-machine seems to think that there’s some analogy to be drawn between EID’s sources of funding-the extraction corporations- and one source of the anti-fracking movement’s-the Park Foundation (http://parkfoundation.org/search.php).
But that is simply absurd.
The Park foundation exists as a CHARITABLE TRUST AND GRANT SOURCE for environmental and educational projects : “The Foundation is dedicated to the aid and support of education, public broadcasting, environment, and other selected areas of interest to the Park family. Scholarship programs have been established in Mr. Park’s name at the two institutions with which he was so close — Ithaca College and North Carolina State University. The two scholarship programs emphasize academic excellence, leadership, and community service — in keeping with Mr. Park’s values. Public broadcasting is a particularly meaningful recipient of funding because the Foundation had its origin in the world of communications. More recently, the Foundation’s interest in environmental causes has been refined to focus on issues of freshwater, particularly in the eastern United States.”
The extraction corporations have not the improvement of the environment, the human condition, or social and economic justice as their objectives. They exist to make money-and with respect to fracking, as much money as is possible before the fossil fuel boom goes completely bust-all else be damned.
These objectives are not merely different; they are diametrically opposed. One is charitable; the other profiteering. The Park Foundation takes human and environmental welfare as its guiding compass; the extraction industry and its representatives profits regardless expense to others. The Park Foundation is not a corporation; it does not lobby; it does not seek profit-driven erection of laws or resistance to regulation; it does not sponsor a hit-squad-all of which describe the extraction industry.
Moreover, what you and your fellows at EID are PAID for doesn’t at the end of the day have anything to do with natural gas per se; it has everything to do with insuring the continuing profitability of your employers. And were the product assault weapons (say, like the one Nicole Jacobs is showing off in one of her Facebook Pictures), or heroin, or nuclear warheads, you’d behave in precisely the same way. That some of these are illegal and some are not is beside the point. All are deeply morally suspect, all hurt people, all need mercenaries to market them.
So I continue to look forward to that hit-piece, Mr. Massaro. What’s clear is that the filming is itself designed to down-play and deflect blame from EID. No doubt Ms. Hippauf will do a far better and more honest job-one to which you have no dignified response but concession and resignation from your post at EID.
I watched the EID version of my presentation. Not very good on EID’s part in taping it. In first part, only half of the powerpoint slides are shown and they are pretty blurry, in the rest the camera is focused on me, which makes the EID version fairly useless.
I am working on converting the powerpoint to a video format with voice-over narrative. It may not be “slick” visually, but at least you will be able to see the slides and understand the presentation.
