Clean Harbors Spells Frack-Tastrophe for the Citizens of Sunbury: Sold Down the Susquehanna by Mayor Dave Persing

February 20, 2013 By Wendy Lee Leave a Comment

You have to wonder whether Sunbury mayor, Dave Persing, really has any very good idea—or even a glimmer of moral compass—about what might be involved in the Clean Harbors construction of a Marcellus Shale Waste Processing Facility smack-dab in the middle of that small city. Planned for the long-idled and stunning eyesore, the Knight-Celotex fiberboard thermal insulation plant shuttered its doors and declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, 2009 (Knight-Celotex files for bankuptcy » News » … [Read more...] about Clean Harbors Spells Frack-Tastrophe for the Citizens of Sunbury: Sold Down the Susquehanna by Mayor Dave Persing

Why States Fail to Regulate Frack Waste

April 2, 2015 By Chip Northrup Leave a Comment

States Undermine Rationale for No Fed Frack Regulations New study details Marcellus/Utica shale states’ failures to regulate oil & gas waste, leaving health and environment at risk Washington, D.C., April 2nd -- A new report shows that states ignore the risks of sometimes hazardous oil and gas waste despite EPA’s exemption of such waste from federal oversight based on “adequate” state management. Wasting Away: Four states’ failure to manage oil and gas waste in the Marcellus and Utica … [Read more...] about Why States Fail to Regulate Frack Waste

Shale Gas Radioactivity

May 10, 2014 By Chip Northrup Leave a Comment

From The Rachel - a compendium of articles and reports on radioactivity in shale gas and shale gas drilling waste. The most radioactive waste material are the drill cuttings from the horizontal (shale) section of a well. Since the shale is the most radioactive sedimentary layer, the horizontal section basically mines radioactive material. Disposing of radioactive drill cuttings can be particularly problematic. At a conventional well - where the cuttings are not from radioactive shale - … [Read more...] about Shale Gas Radioactivity

How Much Frack Filth Does One Marcellus Shale Well Generate?

This data is from the MacGeorge Gas Well drilled by WPX Energy , which is now defunct in our county, thankfully, and has left with lawsuits trailing them and they sold their gas leases to the another , gas company, Southwestern Energy. These four wells on this gas site were drilled in 2012.....and of course, have several DEP Violations....it is surrounded by private, water wells.. by Vera Scroggins, Silver Lake Twp., Pa., Susquehanna County Well Name: MACGEORGE SOUTHEAST … [Read more...] about How Much Frack Filth Does One Marcellus Shale Well Generate?

Revealed: Fracking Used to Inject Nuclear Waste Underground for Decades

March 19, 2015 By Richard Averett Leave a Comment

17th March 2015 By Aaron Dykes and Melissa Melton Guest Writers for Wake Up World Recently unearthed articles from the 1960s detail how nuclear waste was buried beneath the Earth’s surface by Halliburton & Co. for decades, as a means of disposing the by-products of post-World War II atomic energy production. Fracking is already a controversial practice on its face, so allowing industries to inject slurries of toxic, potentially carcinogenic compounds deep beneath the planet’s … [Read more...] about Revealed: Fracking Used to Inject Nuclear Waste Underground for Decades

Radioactive Frack Waste - Too Much of A ‘Good’ Thing!

December 1, 2015 By Richard Averett Leave a Comment

If the Oil & Gas Industry were held to the same environmental standards as other American Industries, they would not be ale to operate with a profit due the enormous amount of pollution and extensive environmental degradation - and public health problems - they create! "Scientists warn that if this radioactive waste is dumped in regular landfills, water running off from the landfills after rainstorms could carry radioactive materials into rivers, streams and drinking water … [Read more...] about Radioactive Frack Waste - Too Much of A ‘Good’ Thing!

History of New York Fracking Bans

May 4, 2013 By Chip Northrup 13 Comments

History is written by the winners, but history is made by the doers. So with that in mind, here's my take on how the town ban movement started in New York, as told by the winners, those relatively few men and women that were instrumental in actually making it happen, first as a legal strategy and then as a political accomplishment - one town at a time. The history to date of the Middlefield and Dryden defenses of Home Rule has been chronicled in legal journals, such as Charles Gottlieb's … [Read more...] about History of New York Fracking Bans

The (Real) History of New York State Frack Bans

July 5, 2014 By Chip Northrup 3 Comments

The history of the frack ban movement has yet to be written - until now. (How's that for a pretentious opening ?) The first New York frack ban ordinance was written by a retired Virginia judge. The first four New York frack bans were inspired by a white paper written by a Florida real estate developer. The first regional conference on frack bans was co-sponsored by a Belgium beer company (not Gazprom) The first petition for a town ban was written by a New Jersey real estate … [Read more...] about The (Real) History of New York State Frack Bans

Where to Get Rid of a Few Billion Gallons of Carcinogenic Radioactive Frack Slime ?

October 13, 2014 By Chip Northrup Leave a Comment

That's not a rhetorical question . . . thousands of tanker-loads of radioactive frack sludge, literally too hot to dispose of. Paint the tankers Hot Pink and drive fast all the way to IdaFrackHo. Where else ? Dilemma: How to Dispose of Carcinogenic Radioactive Frack Waste? October 12, 2014 12:00 AM A few months ago, a Marcellus Shale operator approached Leong Ying, business development manager at the radiation measurement division of Thermo Fisher Scientific, with a problem. Ban Frack Waste Dumping In New York State

February 20, 2013 By Chip Northrup 8 Comments

It is illegal to truck frack waste and dump it as "brine" on roads in Texas. Not as "dust suppressant" Not as "de-icer" Not as chocolate syrup. No SEQR necessary. No "health impact analysis." Not by simply reclassifying flowback as "brine." You just can't do it. It is illegal to pretend to treat frack flowback in municipal wastewater treatment plants in Texas. No local option. No SGEIS. No SPEDES review. No 4 part forms to fill out. You just can't do it. Why is that ? Because even … [Read more...] about Ban Frack Waste Dumping In New York State
