In February of 2013, the Colorado Oil & Gas Association (COGA) submitted a petition to the Fort Collins City Council. The petition opposed a fracking ban that was under consideration.
COGA had hired an outfit called EIS Solutions to collect petition signatures. Turns out many of those signatures were faked.

The petition was withdrawn by COGA, so that should be the end of it, right?

Coloradoan.com reports today: Fort Collins Police investigating error-filled COGA fracking petition
The Fort Collins Police Services Financial Crimes Unit is investigating possible criminal activity involving a petition opposing a Fort Collins fracking ban submitted to city officials in February.
The petition was submitted to the Fort Collins City Council by the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, or COGA, which disavowed the petition after a Coloradoan investigation revealed 22 of the 55 businesses included had been misrepresented or had not actually signed the petition.
“We were asked to look into that and make sure there were no improprieties,” Fort Collins Police Sgt. Don Whitson said Monday. “There is a lot of work (to do) on this to determine if there even was a crime.”
Determine if there even was a crime? How about misrepresentation and fraud for starters?
COGA has stated they are fully cooperating with the police. No mention if EIS Solutions will similarly cooperate.
Word of advice to the Fort Collins Police Services Financial Crimes Unit – look under rocks, you can find many interesting critters crawling around.
