DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY PRODUCTION (DEP)

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently spent some money producing a 7-minute video entitled “Regulating the Natural Gas Industry in Pennsylvania”. Published on May 7, 2014, DEP staff share their personal experiences conducting the important work of DEP’s Oil and Gas Program across Pennsylvania. Note: Per the video on YouTube - “Comments are disabled for the video . “ What does that say about DEP wanting to hear from the public? It begins with April Weiland, Water Quality Specialist Supervisor for DEP. She states that she “loves helping the INDUSTRY as well as the environment, but there’s a misnomer out there when you say you WORK FOR OIL & GAS…” In the first minute Weiland inadvertently confirms what we suspect – DEP works for the fossil fuel industry. Some […]

DEP-DON’T KNOW FRACK (PART 3)

Don’t Know Frack Part 1 Range Resources Don’t Know Frack Part 2 Michael Krancer was appointed as Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary by Governor Tom Corbett in 2011. Krancer resigned his position effective April 15, 2013 and returned to his old law firm of Blank Rome which represents a number of natural gas corporations operating in the Marcellus Shale. He is now head of Blank Rome’s Energy, Petrochemical & Natural Resources Practice. His famous quote, “At the end of the day, my job is to make sure gas is done and gas is done right” provided many observers a unique and different perspective as to the term ‘environmental protection’. According to DEP Compliance Report (i.e. violations) for dates between Jan 1, 2009 thru August 31, 2013, Range Resources […]

Of Aristotle and Anadarko: Why “Better Laws” Will Never be Enough

“Good luck with that!” Ain’t Help 1.3.12: I was running laps at the Bloomsburg University track when I somehow tripped over my I-pod cord and—in a heroic effort to spare my recently re-habilitated right knee—crashed full force onto my right ankle, ripping every ligament from the bone, wrenching and tearing the muscles half way up my leg, and pulling my ankle bones away from my leg bone. Awesome. And Whoa! Nelly! Ouch! A gentleman walking the track nearby could not have failed to see me fall—or for that matter hear my ligaments blowing off my ankle bones. He came over while I was gaining some semblance of comprehension about what had happened, and said “Wow! You better get that looked at.” And then he continued walking. Several minutes later, still […]

PENNSYLVANIA HOMELAND SECURITY GAS DRILLING and MORE

In October 2010, Jim Powers, PA Homeland Security Director resigned following the news of surveillance of gas drilling opponents and other activist groups and protestors. Pennsylvania had a private contract with the Institute of Terrorism Research and Response (ITRR). ITRR even has a FACEBOOK PAGE and TWITTER account. The then Governor Ed Rendell has originally refused to fire Powers, but backtracked saying he was ‘deeply embarrassed’ and ‘appalled’ by the contract and the type of free speech activities his state was monitoring. Rendell did not renew the contract with ITRR. Although the headlines at that time focused on “gas drilling opponents” and “environmentalists” we should note that ITRR also “spied” on groups such as the Tea Party Express, pro-drillers such as Northern Wayne Property Owners Alliance (NWPOA), 2-4 Mid-Atlantic Citizen […]

DCNR – DRILL OR NO DRILL?

DCNR – DRILL OR NO DRILL?

The big shocker in yesterday’s news (6/13/13) was the announcement of Richard Allan’s resignation as Secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. According to news reports, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett asked Allan to resign. Being “asked to resign” is a polite way of saying “YOU’RE FIRED”. The big question is WHY was Allan fired? The Governor’s office is silent as to the reason. Spokesman Kevin Harley would only say it was a “personnel decision.” Two possible reasons are making the rounds: 1. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported it was after an email to his wife surfaced in which he used a racial epithet. “…sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Corbett became aware of an email that Allan wrote to his wife, also a state employee, in which […]

MINUTEMAN ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES RAID – TIP OF THE DRILL BIT?

The barrage of public relations and damage control has begun in what may be just the tip of the drill bit. On its website, Minuteman Environmental Services’s (MES President, Brian Bolus, posted a letter to its customers. Bolus again blames former employees as he did in the press release dated May 30, 2013 “Several months ago I became aware that the Office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General (OAG) was questioning several former, disgruntled employees of Minuteman Environmental Services.” (In the press release Bolus stated it was 18 months ago, so that puts it at some point late in 2011). The posted customer letter further states, MES hired a former United States Attorney, now engaged in private practice, to represent them. Mighty big guns to handle a simple case of disgruntled […]

Tom Corbett visited the Milton facility on Feb. 8, 2012, calling the Minuteman operation an “American success story.” On Feb. 28, the Central Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce honored Minuteman with its “Business of the Year” award. The Lewisburg home of Brian Bolus, Minuteman’s CEO, was also raided. Bolus donated $10,000 to Corbett’s campaign between 2009-2010.
