Of Hockey Pucks and Natural Gas

In February 2011, Bloomsburg reports Billionaire Terry Pegula bought the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres. What does hockey have to do with gas drilling? Maybe nothing, and maybe in the case of Terry Pegula – a lot. On February 23, 2011 the Buffalo News reported: Excerpt: Pegula drew violations as gas driller In the course of making his fortune, the Florida billionaire, negotiating to buy the Buffalo Sabres, contributed heavily to politicians in a position to advance his business interests and established a less-than-stellar track record in the environmentally dicey business of drilling for natural gas, The Buffalo News has found. A news review of compliance records found East Resources, the company Terrence M. Pegula sold last summer for $4.7 billion, had a middling record of complying with environmental regulations […]

IPAA PR Campaign Attempts to Make Soup

December 21, 2012

The Independent Petroleum Association of America’s (IPAA) public relations campaign – Energy-in-Depth (EID) is attempting to make soup in the blog post: Heinz Stone Soup: Natural Gas Activists at Work. Stone Soup? Really? Stone Soup is an old folk story in which hungry strangers persuade local people of a town to give them food. It is usually told as a lesson in cooperation, especially amid scarcity. Quick version of the story: Three Soldiers, were carrying nothing more than an empty cooking pot. They walked to a village. Upon their arrival, the villagers are unwilling to share any of their food stores with the hungry soldiers. Then the soldiers go to a stream and fill the pot with water, drop a large stone in it, and place it over a fire. […]

Range Resources - SQUIRREL!

November 15, 2012

Range Resources yells Squirrel and the news media is distracted. For the past two days, Bumstead and Puko of the TribLive News has gone bounding after a squirrel with the Range Resources hit pieces on PA Representative Jesse White. Yesterday’s squirrel was about campaign contributions. Today’s squirrel is about “Hispanics and Mexicans”. Tomorrow’s squirrel? Who knows? Maybe about why White isn’t a member of Hair Club for men? There are 4 stages of media/public relations that the Natural Gas Industry (and most other corporations) follow. DENY Responsibility: How many times have we heard the standard excuse of “the water was like that before we drilled”? DISTORT the Facts: Grab all spurious information and throw it against the wall like spaghetti, see what sticks and run with it whether it is […]
