New York Shale Well Leaks. Surprise.

May 15, 2013
New York Shale Well Leaks. Surprise.

A shale gas well leaking into a groundwater is a dog-bites-man story in Pennsylvania. It’s no longer news, unless it happens to a Famous Fracker, like Shelly DePue’s bubbling annulus. Or a Fracking Media Outlet, like Forbes, admits it happens. Then it’s news. Or when it happens in New York. Particularly when the DEC tried to cover it up: http://marcelluseffect.blogspot.com/2013/05/wetterling-well-short-lived-leaky.html “The Wetterling well was drilled to 4745 feet, not as deep as some of the wells around the area (some go deep into the Trenton Black River formation around 10,000 or so feet below the surface). There was no horizontal drilling, no hydrofracking. And yet it still sprung a gas leak. Methane leaks are not unusual for shale gas wells in Pennsylvania. In fact, citizen reporter Vera Scroggins recently compiled a stack of “Letters of […]

Fracking Center and Fluffy Kittens

March 21, 2013

WHOOO-HOOO, Frackers and Environmentalists collaborate! At least that’s the headlines and spin from the natural gas PR people and the media echo chamber. What does this new collaboration have to do with fluffy kittens? Not much. What does this new collaboration have to do with addressing the real issue of fracking? Not much. This new collaboration is called the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD). NOTE: SUSTAINABLE SHALE DEVELOPMENT. A hat tip to Eric B for locating the website who wrote : “Just saw an article on this new group, the Center for Sustainable Shale Development. Sounds related, since EDF, Penn Future and Heinz and all list on the partner page : http://www.sustainableshale.org/ You can tell the site was quickly thrown together as only the home page stays under the […]

What the Natural Gas Industry Isn’t Saying

February 24, 2013

By now, most of us have seen at least one TV commercial produced by Energy Tomorrow. Energy Tomorrow is a public relations project of the American Petroleum Institute (API), and is similar Energy-in-Depth, a project the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) without the blog posts. Other natural gas related projects of API include: Energy Citizens, We are Energy Nation, Energy From Shale, Vote 4 Energy, Energy Answered, Who Owns Big Oil, and Gas Prices Explained. The API’s public relation projects all give a rosy, life is good with gas picture with actress and former Miss Hawaii World beauty queen Brooke Alexander strutting purposefully on the recording set. What is not mentioned in these commercials is the downside, not even a tiny disclaimer racing at breakneck speed at the end. […]

Fracking the Airport – Breath Deep

February 9, 2013

As I read Allegheny County, Consol strike $500M airport gas drilling deal | February 8, 2013 | By Mark Belko and Jon Schmitz / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the old story about a king, who turned everything he touched into gold came to mind. Clichés like “he has the Midas touch” is usually seen as a good thing, meaning that a person has the ability to make money, lots of money. However, the flip-side of the story is often forgotten. That being while the king did turn everything he touched to gold, it also included his clothes, food, drink and even his daughter. It is a story about the tragedy of avarice. In one version, Midas asks to be forgiven and the curse in lifted. In other versions, Midas eventually dies from […]

Fun with Frackers – Responding to Letters to the Editor

February 8, 2013

A letter to the editor entitled “Don’t allow fear tactics to sway drilling opinion” was published in my local paper, the Times-Leader which covers the northeast region of Pennsylvania. (I saved the letter page on Scribd, just in case the link or newspaper page disappears. See it here ) Use either link, scroll down to the 2nd letter to “Don’t allow fear tactics to sway drilling opinion”. For convention, my responses to the letter are in bold, the letter is in italics. A recent letter “Gas drilling presents problems and concerns” (Jan. 23) raised questions regarding natural gas development, a practice that’s improving our economy and providing jobs for tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians. This is a great recital of the Natural Gas Industry talking points. In the first and […]

Responsible Drilling – Just sayin’

February 8, 2013

On Saturday, Feb. 8, former DEP Secretary John Hanger will be in Chambersburg, PA. If you don’t know it already - Hanger has tossed his hat into the ring to be the Democratic Candidate for Governor of PA. Following his keynote address at the Fifth Annual Wilson College “Energy and You” workshop, Hanger will join area residents for lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Franklin County Democratic Headquarters, 256 S. Main St., Chambersburg. This blog post isn’t about Hanger. It’s about some buzzwords you will hear in the coming months from not only Hanger, but also from new and old candidates about natural gas. The issue of natural gas drilling won’t be in terms of its impact on people, land, water or air. The candidate will quickly pivot […]

Barto Compressor Station Exceeds Pollution Standards

January 31, 2013

The Clean Air Council has conducted a study of the Barto Compression Station in Penn Township, Lycoming County. The study finds the station is is creating pollution concentrations nearly three times the amount allowed under the federal health-based air quality standards. To the right is a photo clip from a video taken in February of 2011. Scott Canon, from the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition of Luzerne County (GDAC), took a trip to the Barto Station to see it first hand. (Click Here for full Video) Back in 2011, Chief Gathering and Williams each had plans to each construct compressor stations and metering stations approximately 1,500 ft from the Dallas, PA school campus. There are 5 schools, K-12, on the campus where over 3,000 children attend, plus the few hundred people […]

Range Resources Accused of Water Test Tampering

January 30, 2013

The headline on 1/29/2013 publication of the Observer-Report read “Range denies intentionally providing inaccurate water testing results” | by Linda Metz, Staff Writer | observer-reporter.com | Jan 29, 2013 “Range Resources denied Tuesday it intentionally provided inaccurate water testing results to three Amwell Township families who attribute their health problems to drilling activity near their homes.” Excerpt: Range has argued the plaintiffs have offered no proof their illnesses are linked to the drilling activity. The plaintiffs claim Range did not provide them full water sampling results, which would have shown an array of contaminants related to their illnesses. According to Kendra Smith, Range purposely omitted certain findings from the water testing results that showed contamination. She said the drilling company misrepresented the results even though it knew that the property […]

Washington Legal Foundation (WLF): Frackin’ Joe Camel with Law Books

Washington Legal Foundation (WLF): Frackin' Joe Camel with Law Books

Perhaps you’ve notice the similarities between Tobacco advertising and that of the Natural Gas Industry. Years ago the tobacco industry vehemently denied any connection between smoking and health issues. Tobacco advertising in the 1950’s would often include doctors and other medical professionals in their ads as a method of allaying public concerns. After all if you doctor smoked, what’s the harm? The Natural Gas industry hasn’t gone as far as including doctors or even actors dressed up as doctors in their advertising, nonetheless, the advertising and talking points do include words like “Safe”, “Natural”, “Clean”. These words are selected to make the public feel more comfortable. TXSharon of the BlueDaze blog has noticed the Natural Gas Industry’s approach is like a template lifted from the tobacco industry’s play book. She […]
