Last month the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC), a fossil fuel funded lobbying organization, launched a “grassroots” advocacy program. “The goal of United Shale Advocates (USA) is to give a voice and a platform to those who support shale development in Pennsylvania but who are not directly involved in the industry”, said Steve Forde, vice president of communications and outreach for the Pittsburgh-based Marcellus Shale Coalition. What does that mean? It means we have yet another fossil fuel funded public relations campaign masquerading as grassroots. The term “grassroots” implies that the creation of the movement and the group happens at the local level, as many volunteers in the community give their time, energy and resources to work on an issue which concerns them. DISNEY CANCELS FRACKERS

Radio Disney in Cleveland Ohio has canceled the remaining fossil fuel industry sponsored shows. Responding to Disney’s partnership with the Ohio Oil and Gas Association (OOGA), more than 80,000 people signed an online petition to demand Disney CEO Bob Iger stop the OOGA program. News organization Al Jazerra ran the Disney-OOGA partnership story on January 8, 2013. On January 9, 2013, Disney emailed a statement to Al Jazeera, saying the company has pulled out of the remaining installments of the Rocking Ohio tour. “The sole intent of the collaboration between Radio Disney and the nonprofit Rocking in Ohio educational initiative was to foster kids’ interest in science and technology. In 2010, Gasland, a documentary by Josh Fox, explored the impact of natural gas drilling, specifically the practice of slickwater horizontal hydraulic fracturing. To the lay person, it’s known as fracking. Gasland was attacked by the natural gas industry, and thanks to those attacks, people became more aware and started to educated themselves about the hazards and risks. Gasland also did something else; it brought a small rural town in northeast Pennsylvania into the limelight. That town was Dimock. FRACKING GOES RADIOACTIVE

Two years ago, in the New York Times series, Drilling Down, it was revealed radioactive waste water was being dumped into Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams. According to the DEP this practice has stopped. About 11 months ago, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), announced plans to study levels of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) associated with natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale. The DEP says it plans to analyze radioactivity in frack flowback water, drill cuttings, drill mud, and the levels in equipment such as pipes, well casings storage tanks, treatment systems and trucks. The study is expected to take 12-14 months. In addition studying NORMS, it will also look at Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORMS). The results of the November 5, 2013 ballot measures regarding the natural gas industry is cause for concern by a number of investors. The Motley Fool, an investment/stock market website lamented over how fracking is losing the PR Battle. Per Sarah Murphy article: “Seriously, these guys have got to step up their game if they want to survive. Election Day for Covert, New York is fast approaching. At stake is 3 seats on the Covert Town Board, and the incumbents are throwing mud as fast as they can. Within days of Covert Counts (local grassroots group) announcing challengers to those open town board seats, residents were robo-spammed by phone calls paid for by the Seneca County Republican Committee. The robo-calls stated Covert Counts was receiving financial support from “extreme left-wing groups from Albany”. The robo-calls did not mention the names of the “extreme left-wing groups from Albany”, apparently just mentioning extreme left-wing and Albany in the same sentence is suppose to send chills down your spine. October 9th, 2013 The Associated Press’s resident Frak Flak, Kevin Begos (pronounced ‘bogus’ by the fractavist cognoscenti) has won this years Fracking Fiction Award, sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute. Begos received the award at a ceremony held last night at the tony Frackmore Club in the beautiful downtown Ardmore, Oklahoma Holiday Inn attended a bevy of celebrity frackers and frak shills, including the glamourous Brooke Shales, the TV Gas Blonde, who presented Mr. Begos with the award. Shale Justice hosted John Hanger, former Pennsylvania DEP Secretary on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 for a lively discussion. WATCH THE VIDEO Invites had been extended to all the Democratic Candidates for PA Governor. KUDOS to Mr. Hanger for graciously accepting. Contrary to the Marcellus Drilling News, Shale Justice did not gate crash or protest their own event. Shale Justice extended the invitation, arranged for the date, time, location and even provided some light refreshments. The event began with Mr. Hanger making a few remarks.
