FRACK THE DISNEY MOUSE

FRACK THE DISNEY MOUSE

Hey KIDS! Fracking for oil and gas is COOL! IT’S FUN! Mickey says you too can build a pipeline! Yep, Disney has jumped on the fracking hype and joined with the Ohio Oil and Gas Association (OOGA) to promote fossil fuel fracking to kids and make it fun! Elementary school classrooms in Ohio are being treated to a super special, game show-like day presentation, brought to them by Radio Disney and funded by the state Oil and Gas Association. All of the activities are aimed at teaching kids about science — the science, that is “behind oil and gas production and their value as natural resources.” The Wooster Daily Record describes how the program, “Rocking in Ohio,” combined science and fun (and industry interests) at the Wayne County fairgrounds this […]

CADAVER COSMETICS: Penn State’s “Marcellus by Design,” MCOR, and the Edu-Green-Washing of Big Gas

CADAVER COSMETICS: Penn State's "Marcellus by Design," MCOR, and the Edu-Green-Washing of Big Gas

Penn State just doesn’t seem to be able to figure out how to be a university-as opposed to a corporate-sponsored research hub, job training program center, and now green-washing “reclamation” aesthetics authority-for the natural gas industry. It’s old news that Penn State epitomizes Frackademia. As reported by Reid R. Frazier of The Allegheny Front and Olivia Garber of PublicSource in 2011, “the school does not give out the information because companies do not want their competitors to know what research they’re doing — or that they’re sponsoring university research at all.” Moreover, “[i]n 2007, Penn State President Graham Spanier lobbied the state legislature to not include {Penn State] under the state’s revamped “Right-to-Know” law… Mr. Spanier said the schools should not have to disclose donor gifts, vendor contracts, intellectual property […]

Kevin Bogus Wins Fracking Fiction Award !

(AP) Ardmore, OK. October 9th, 2013 The Associated Press’s resident Frak Flak, Kevin Begos (pronounced ‘bogus’ by the fractavist cognoscenti) has won this years Fracking Fiction Award, sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute. Begos received the award at a ceremony held last night at the tony Frackmore Club in the beautiful downtown Ardmore, Oklahoma Holiday Inn attended a bevy of celebrity frackers and frak shills, including the glamourous Brooke Shales, the TV Gas Blonde, who presented Mr. Begos with the award. When reached for comment by NFW’s seemingly omniscient and ubiquitous reporter, Mr. Bogus had this to say, tears welling up in his eyes: “I tried really really hard. I really thank these guys, the API, for such a great award.” Coughing,”It’s tough to write fracking fiction. Just ask Edgar Allan […]

WATER FROM AIR

WATER FROM AIR

How many people living in the gaslands have no clean water? We really don’t know. We don’t know how many people have been and are currently being supplied with water by the gas corporations. DEP doesn’t track it. Between gag orders, non-disclosure clauses imposed by the gas corporations, and reluctance of state and federal environmental to do their job, we don’t have these figures. We can guess based on groundwater contamination complaints filed with federal and state agencies. However, an exact or even a close number is nearly impossible to determine. What we do know is there are perhaps thousands of people who do not have clean water, and thousands more to come. This is something we see on advertisements, organizations asking for donations to give people in 3rd world […]

DIMOCK GAS WELL SHUT DOWN DUE TO WELL WATER CONTAMINATION

DIMOCK GAS WELL SHUT DOWN DUE TO WELL WATER CONTAMINATION

Yes, we are revisiting water well contamination in Dimock! This week, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has determined a natural gas well is not viable due to leaking methane. Two properties have been effected. One is receiving water supplied by Cabot, and Cabot has installed a water filtration system in the second residence. What was that about natural gas industrialization NOT contaminating water? Regulators have been studying the source of methane in two water wells in the Susquehanna County community since February, when the water for one home became turbid and saturated with gas. Regulators said the frozen vent helped them to identify the suspect gas well - Cabot’s Costello 1 - but they concluded that opening the vent is “not the answer to the problem.” Instead, during […]

IPAA EID RELEASES POOP 3.0

IPAA EID RELEASES POOP 3.0

In 2009 the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) created a public relations campaign called Energy In Depth (EID). The original EID branched out into other web pages specific to geographic locations. This included EID-Marcellus for Pennsylvania and New York, and the EID-OHIO for people in Ohio. Other places with no websites include California, Texas, “MTN” states, Michigan and Illinois. This month IPPA unveiled a “new improved” version created a one-stop shopping for rehash of the gas industry’s talking points. The new IPAA-EID site has more bells and whistles in an effort to improve the gas industry’s poor image. In other words, IPAA has put a pretty red bow on a pile of dog poop. New features include a video series which Jeff Eschelman, IPPA’s VP of Public Relations, hopes […]

The Natural Gas Message

The Natural Gas Message

I recently gave a presentation on the Message and the Messengers of the natural gas industry. I have broken this presentation into two parts. Part One dissects the standard talking points of the industry, using an opinion piece by Chris Faulkner, CEO at Breitling Energy Companies, as the prime example. The Message video is approx. 30 minutes long. CLICK HERE TO WATCH IT Part 2 – The Messengers, examines the trade organizations, front groups and astroturfing echo chambers who deliver the coordinated messages. This will be available as soon as I am able to record it. New York Shale Well Leaks. Surprise.

New York Shale Well Leaks. Surprise.

A shale gas well leaking into a groundwater is a dog-bites-man story in Pennsylvania. It’s no longer news, unless it happens to a Famous Fracker, like Shelly DePue’s bubbling annulus. Or a Fracking Media Outlet, like Forbes, admits it happens. Then it’s news. Or when it happens in New York. Particularly when the DEC tried to cover it up: http://marcelluseffect.blogspot.com/2013/05/wetterling-well-short-lived-leaky.html “The Wetterling well was drilled to 4745 feet, not as deep as some of the wells around the area (some go deep into the Trenton Black River formation around 10,000 or so feet below the surface). There was no horizontal drilling, no hydrofracking. And yet it still sprung a gas leak. Methane leaks are not unusual for shale gas wells in Pennsylvania. In fact, citizen reporter Vera Scroggins recently compiled a stack of “Letters of […]

DEP Celebrates National Drinking Water Week with FRACKade

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS INTENDED TO BE SATIRE, TONGUE-IN-CHEEK, HUMOR, ala THE ONION TYPE STORY. The Pennsylvania Department of Energy Production (DEP) kicked off a celebration of National Drinking Water Week with a gala event at Cheapskate Energy Arena in Oklahoma. Broke Axelander, spokes model for Energy Gone Tomorrow, opened the event with a rousing rendition of “We’re in the Money”. Attendees included oil & gas executives, representatives from organizations such as the Marcellus Shill Coalition, and Energy-Inept, and legislators seeking campaign contributions and free super-bowl trips. Part-time Acting DEP Secretary reiterated Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett’s commitment of frackwater in every faucet and a drill rig in every yard. He reminded the audience of the Governor’s low approval rating and to make every dollar count towards the Governor’s re-selection in […]
