WOLF GETS CAKE AND EATS IT TOO

Via an executive order, Governor Tom Wolf issued an executive order #2015-03 which on first glance appears to stop all drilling on state lands and forests. To those who have broken out the champagne and are toasting the Governor’s actions you may want to put the cork back into the bottle and read the actual executive order. Executive Order 2015-03 - Leasing of State Forest and State Park Land for Oil and Gas Development There are two important items in the Executive order: The first is in the “whereas”: WHEREAS, DCNR has concluded that additional leasing of State Forest land or State Park land for oil and gas development would jeopardize DCNR’s ability to fulfill its legislative duty to conserve and maintain these public natural resources, and to sustain its […]

Of Aristotle and Anadarko: Why “Better Laws” Will Never be Enough

Of Aristotle and Anadarko: Why “Better Laws” Will Never be Enough

“Good luck with that!” Ain’t Help 1.3.12: I was running laps at the Bloomsburg University track when I somehow tripped over my I-pod cord and—in a heroic effort to spare my recently re-habilitated right knee—crashed full force onto my right ankle, ripping every ligament from the bone, wrenching and tearing the muscles half way up my leg, and pulling my ankle bones away from my leg bone. Awesome. And Whoa! Nelly! Ouch! A gentleman walking the track nearby could not have failed to see me fall—or for that matter hear my ligaments blowing off my ankle bones. He came over while I was gaining some semblance of comprehension about what had happened, and said “Wow! You better get that looked at.” And then he continued walking. Several minutes later, still […]

FRACKED: LOYALSOCK STATE FOREST

FRACKED: LOYALSOCK STATE FOREST

Over 500 people jammed a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources meeting on Monday June 3, 2013, to voice their opposition to natural gas drilling in the Loyalsock State Forest. The Loyalsock State Forest covers approximately 100,000 acres across Bradford, Lycoming and Sullivan Counties. The targeted area for gas drilling includes the Logger’s Path and Rock Run, both are highly valued destinations for visitors. From the mid 1800’s to early 1900’s Pennsylvania was in the midst of a lumber boom. Millions of acres were sacrificed. Mountains were clear cut. Tops of trees were left to dry, and burning embers spewing from passing steam trains caused devastating wildfires. Heavy rains caused erosion and flooding in previously “safe” areas. Little thought was given to the impact of cutting down old growth trees […]

Is there Nothing Sacred? Anadarko Suckers the State to Frack the Loyalsock

Note: This piece is to be read as public comment at the June 3rd, 4-6PM DCNR Hearing at Lycoming College, Wendle Hall, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It is not intended as an analytical piece-but as a philosophical and moral argument. My name is Wendy Lynne Lee, and I’m a member of the Shale Justice Coalition. I’m an academic and a writer by profession, and a committed activist on behalf of social justice, animal welfare, and environmental integrity. I also take a lot of pictures, and I have made it my project to document in words and photographs the drill pads, sand cans, compressors, open pits, the army of toxic waste tankers, the loss of habitat, the forest fragmentation, the creek and stream pollution, the substandard pipeline welds, the road destruction, the systematic […]

Tearing Down Trees - Putting up Gas Rigs

April 2, 2013

Pennsylvania is proving it hasn’t learned from past mistakes. Lack of meaningful and enforceable regulation, lack of foresight and blinded by dreams of shiny gold, Pennsylvania decimated it forests in the “lumber boom”. The Pennsylvania lumber industry became a massive enterprise beginning in the middle part of the 19th century. Experienced lumbermen from New England like John Leighton and James Perkins arrived at Williamsport along the West Branch Susquehanna River in 1846. About 80 years later, the boom busted. All the trees were gone. Once the trees disappeared, the people were soon to follow. They moved to West Virginia and the Great Lake States. The lumbermen left behind a barren landscape that was devastated by erosion and wildfires. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania bought the thousands of acres of deforested and […]

The Fracking of Pennsylvania State Parks

October 19, 2012

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation is one of the world’s largest independent oil and gas production corporations. It is headquartered in The Woodlands, SPD Montgomery County, Texas. Anadarko had 25 percent working interest in the Macondo Prospect, which was operated by BP and its finances were affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Anadarko now wants to frack Pennsylvania’s State parks to deliver a competitive and sustainable rate of return to shareholders. These are state parks OWNED by people – real people, specifically the REAL PEOPLE OF PENNSYLVANIA. Our State Parks are not cash cows to be exploited and destroyed for short term gains and in exchange for long term pains. This will not be just one drill pad. It will be many drill pads. It will not be one pipeline. It […]

The Neutering of the DCNR

October 9, 2012

How would you go about rendering a governmental department useless or make it more amiable to your policies while still preserving the façade of operating in the public interests? Appoint a Director or Secretary who is in agreement with your policies, or will follow those policies regardless of personal views. Cut the budget for that department which will result in loss of staff and resources needed for optimal management and operations. Create a work environment which will force out those in opposition to the policies. If they do not leave in protest – fire them. Public Relation events to maintain the façade and distract the public from what is really being done. This is what is happening at the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Richard J Allen […]
