FRACKERS REBRANDING FRACKING

FRACKERS REBRANDING FRACKING

When a product or corporation takes a hit in public opinion, one of the steps that will be taken is to change their name or roll out a rebranding campaign. Led by their front group, the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC), frackers are rebranding fracking. Or to put it another way, they are putting a pretty red bow on a pile of poop. How much are they spending on this fracking rebranding campaign? They won’t say. It’s proprietary, hush hush, in the same fashion as the super-double secret ingredients in the chemicals used in fracking. With the blessings of the Heritage Foundation, a right wing think tank, the fracking ad campaign feature actors , including a little girl, saying “ Fracking’s a good word”, “Fracking Rocks” and “Fracking: Rock Solid for […]

UNITED SHALE ASTROTURF

UNITED SHALE ASTROTURF

With much fanfare and political photo-ops, the media was flooded with stories about a new pro-natural gas “grassroots” group back in march 2014. The name of the group is United Shale Advocates (USA). As was pointed out in GASROOTS – United Shale Advocates is far from being a grassroots organization. It’s gas-roots, or more to the point ASTROTURF. Astroturf groups are industry backed groups posing as “Grass”roots. In other words, just as Astroturf is fake grass, Astroturf groups are fake grassroots groups. More proof was found today in the form of a “Robo-email Blasts” urging members to write their legislators. They even tell the members what to write. Many gas-roots Astroturf groups, industry spokespeople, and supporters have accused Fracktivist groups of using Robo-email Blasts in the past. Somehow, when a […]

COVERT NY – A NATURAL GAS BATTLEGROUND

May 24, 2013
COVERT NY – A NATURAL GAS BATTLEGROUND

Covert, New York, small, rural, agricultural and not the kind of place you would expect a battle to be taking place. The headline should probably read David battles Goliath. What is happening in Covert NY is a story of people taking on the natural gas giants and their own town government. While the state of New York does have a moratorium in place, Covert joins other towns in not counting on the moratorium to protect them from the industrialization of their communities. They know the moratorium may not last, and should a state ban on gas drilling happen it may be quickly turned over by a state administration and/or legislature. Like the Boy Scouts, they are being prepared. On Thursday, May 2, 2013, the New York State Appellate Court upheld […]

JLCNY From Grassroots to Astroturf

JLCNY From Grassroots to Astroturf

The Joint Landowners Coalition of New York (JLCNY) is quite the active and vocal group, often participating in events with the Independent Petroleum Association of America’s (IPAA) public relations campaign called Energy-in-Depth (EID). JLCNY has now transformed itself from what was a supposedly a Grassroots organization to an Astroturf one, by aligning itself with Americans for Prosperity (AFP). AFP has chapters in just about every state in the union. Let’s start connecting the dots with AFP. (Related: JLCNY Is Now Officially A Koch Fracking Front Group) Per Sourcewatch: Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a group fronting special interests founded in 2004 by oil billionaire David Koch and Richard Fink (a member of the board of directors of Koch Industries). AFP has been accused of funding astroturf operations but also has […]

The Message and the Messengers Presentation

May 4, 2013

I would like to thank Professors Wendy Lee and Susan O’Donnell of Bloomsburg University for their tremendous work in bringing the Marcellus Shale Documentary Project to our area, and for making me part of it. On April 30, 2013, I gave a presentation which examines the messaging machine of the natural gas industry. Unfortunately, we were unable to record it. I have uploaded the presentation, these are just the slides and you may view it by clicking: http://www.scribd.com/doc/139392431/The-Message-and-the-Messengers For the slides and my notes, click: http://www.scribd.com/doc/139392940/The-Message-and-the-Messengers If you care for even more in-depth look, check out these related blog posts: American Energy Coalition (AEC) – Grassroots my A** Control Risks Group Limited (CRG) joins the Fracking Play Energy-in-Depth (EID) “GAS”roots – 1 Energy-in-Depth (EID) “GAS”roots – 2 Energy-in-Depth (EID) […]

American Energy Coalition (AEC) – Grassroots my A**

March 26, 2013

While doing some research this morning, I stumbled over a website called American Energy Coalition (AEC). Their front page is loaded with Anti-Natural Gas articles. This got my curiosity itching. Searching through their website, I looked for information on who was running the “group”. Nothing. Not a single name. The contact page has a form, and a snail mail address. I’ll get into the snail mail address in a bit. Was someone was trying to pull the wool over my eyes? I downloaded their brochure. No names, no one listed as Executive Director, President, or Secretary. No staffer, no press contact, no spokesperson. Nada. Zip. Nothing. A search on the domain name also turned up empty. AEC domain name is registered by “proxy”. Now I am really curious. Next stop […]
