No Fracking Way

DEC Fracking Shills Cash In

by Chip Northrup on March 13, 2013

It has already started, the same people that systematically gutted the DEC’s fracking regulations, that will serve New York up on a fracking platter as the only state where gas production is state tax exempt and has no autonomous environmental oversight - are cashing in - by going to work for frackers, or more specifically as shale shysters. Thus confirming Cuomo’s timing - the last man standing at the DEC is going to get to shovel the regulations out the door - after the rest of the team have already jumped ship.

Steve Russo is just the latest fracking shill at New York’s “environmental agency” to go to work for the industry he was supposed to regulate. This is known as the “revolving door.” Which is illegal in some places . . . . you know, like dumping flowback on roads. . . But look on the sunny side:

The DEC won’t have anybody left to defend the mess that Russo made of the regulations

Imagine the additions to the law firm’s brochure:

“Got a thorny compulsory integration hearing ? Call our new Albany partner, Steve Russo, he wrote the law ! You can push the landowner into your well head first, feet first of sideways ! Steve will fix it for you.”

“Spacing unit next to a school ? No worries, pardner, call Steve Russo, he wrote the regs. There is no setback of as shale well from a school in New York. You can spud that sucker right next to the swing set. Steve can help ! Call today for your free consultation at only $500 hr.”

The state Department of Environmental Conservation’s top lawyer is on his way out after about two years on the job.

Steven Russo, DEC deputy commissioner and general counsel, is leaving for a job in the private sector, agency spokeswoman Emily DeSantis confirmed Tuesday. Russo will head to Greenberg Traurig, a law firm with offices across the globe, including Albany, White Plains and New York City.

He will “lead the firm’s New York environmental practice” and starts later this month, according to DeSantis. Russo has played a key role in the Cuomo administration’s review of hydrofracking, often serving as support at legislative hearings. He was criticized by environmental and anti-fracking groups last year when it was found he had emailed a draft document to a gas-industry attorney before they were released to the public.

First they write the regulations for the frackers. Then they go to work for the frackers.
