COVERT COUNTS ON NOVEMBER 5

COVERT COUNTS ON NOVEMBER 5

In 7 short days, Covert Counts will see how well they have done with their campaigns.  They need your help. Covert Counts grew out of Concerned Citizens of Covert (CCC), a true grassroots organization comprising entirely of volunteers.   At serious risk is the community of Covert – its land, its water, its air and its people as the threat of natural gas drilling and fracking draws nearer. As CCC, the volunteers sought to work within the system of the local town government.   They talked to people, held educational events, held petition drives, attended and spoke at town meetings.  In 2012, CCC offered to create a Citizen’s advisory committee in conjunction with the town board for the purpose of researching and educating the residents of Covert.  The advisory committee would have […]

DEP-DON’T KNOW FRACK (PART 3)

Don’t Know Frack Part 1 Range Resources Don’t Know Frack Part 2 Michael Krancer was appointed as Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary by Governor Tom Corbett in 2011.  Krancer resigned his position effective April 15, 2013 and returned to his old law firm of Blank Rome which represents a number of natural gas corporations operating in the Marcellus Shale.  He is now head of Blank Rome’s Energy, Petrochemical & Natural Resources Practice. His famous quote, “At the end of the day, my job is to make sure gas is done and gas is done right” provided many observers a unique and different perspective as to the term ‘environmental protection’. According to DEP Compliance Report (i.e. violations) for dates between Jan 1, 2009 thru August 31, 2013, Range Resources […]

RANGE RESOURCES-DON’T KNOW FRACK (PART 2)

Click here for Don’t Know Frack Part 1 With almost any issue facing us today we hear the mantra of needing transparency.  The government needs to be more transparent, regulatory agencies need to be more transparent, corporations need to be transparent and the general public rallies behind the mantra. Political campaigns often carry a talking point or two about supporting and needing more transparency.   Corporate advertisements and talking points will tout their transparency. Specific to the natural gas industry it appears they are about as transparent as the drilling mud from an inadvertent return to the surface, (i.e. drilling mud spill or blowout). In the A Motion for Contempt and for Sanctions in the Form of An Adverse Inference Docket No. 2011-149-R  it was pointed out Range Resources ran to […]

Of all the issues about natural gas drilling, perhaps the one which has garnered the most media attention is water contamination and just what is in the fracking “water”.  According to who in the industry you listen to, the amount of chemicals added to water and sand are between 0.5% – 0.9%.   Each “frack” in the Marcellus Shale uses between 5-7 […]

COVERT NY – A NATURAL GAS BATTLEGROUND

COVERT NY – A NATURAL GAS BATTLEGROUND

Covert, New York, small, rural, agricultural and not the kind of place you would expect a battle to be taking place. The headline should probably read David battles Goliath.  What is happening in Covert NY is a story of people taking on the natural gas giants and their own town government. While the state of New York does have a moratorium in place, Covert joins other towns in not counting on the moratorium to protect them from the industrialization of their communities.    They know the moratorium may not last, and should a state ban on gas drilling happen it may be quickly turned over by a state administration and/or legislature.  Like the Boy Scouts, they are being prepared. On Thursday, May 2, 2013, the New York State Appellate Court upheld […]

DEC Gutted the Fracking Regulations

DEC Gutted the Fracking Regulations

Brian Brock FOIL’d copies of the DEC’s proposed 1997 fracking regulations, as previously reported here. The DEC then redacted them in 2000 –  blanking out entire sections of the proposed regulations or putting a line through them. The DEC then pretended that they had lost the proposed regulations entirely - during the entire four (4) year dSGEIS review process.  The DEC pretended to lose the proposed regs. because they offer substantially more protections for the environment, the general public, and adjacent property owners than what the DEC is currently proposing. After receiving over 80,000 comments on the dSGEIS, the DEC’s final proposed drilling regulations –  that received over 210,000 comments  - are substantially worse than the DEC’s own internal draft of 16 years ago. These “lost” regulations are a history lesson in corruption at the DEC. Brian FOIL’d the […]

FrackNation: Tedious leprechaun likes fracking. So fracking what ?

FrackNation: Tedious leprechaun likes fracking. So fracking what ?

The history of anti-Gasland mockumentaries repeats itself – again. The first time as tragedy – Shelly dePue’s painfully embarrassing Bubbling Annulus, (which is the unseen star of Truthyland), the second time as farce: Phlegm McKleer’s cut ‘n paste FrackNation.  Wherein Phlegm the Phracking Phreak explains the grass roots opposition to shale gas industrialization as a Russian plot.  That’s certainly news to me, tovarich. When I thought I was supposed to be working for the fracking Park Foundation. But it explains much about this irritating leprechaun’s antics: He’s just fracking nuts. He teams up with frack flak Tom Shepstone. Which pretty much sums it up. Then hassles Yoko’s bus tour of the Pennsylvania frack zone. Check. Gratuitous use of derivative movie title. FrackNation / GasLand. Get it ? Must have seemed clever after 4 pints of Guinness.  Trys to rip off Michael Moore’s documentary […]

The NOT Real Promised Land

The NOT Real Promised Land

On December 28, 2012, the movie Promised Land is being released in New York and Los Angeles.  For the rest of us, we will have to wait until January 4, 2013. Since its announcement this summer, the Natural Gas industry has had its boxers in a bunch.   Between editorial hit pieces of Promised Land, and attempts to stir up a “scandal”, the Natural Gas industry has created quite an interest in the movie.   The Natural Gas industry has gone as far as to release the script, well, technically not the industry itself, but rather one of its “friends” released the script. In November 2012, Phelim McAleer, the director of “FrackNation” wrote an op-ed in the Blaze, and released the script.   See  FrackNation attacks Promised Land. Just as the Natural Gas […]

Holy Fracking Rent-a-Rally

Holy Fracking Rent-a-Rally

Turns out Holy Frack Front is just another fracking Rent-a-Rally, where ringers are bussed in, fed, etc. to insure turnout at professionally staged gas industry PR events.  Surprise. This time with the ecclesiastical blessing of the Church of the Holy Shale who exhort their flock to “Man Up” to confront “Him” - in exchange for a box lunch, free round trip to Albany and some donuts. Fracking Evangelist Rev. Brian Conover exhorts his flock on behalf of the landmen, fracking shills and charlatans :  Dear CNY Friends: This Rally in Albany is happening at the most critical time in our four and a half year existence as a coalition.  This is the time when NY needs a true leader who can support the DEC and “Man Up” to the challenges at hand.  This is the time […]
