From The Rachel - a compendium of articles and reports on radioactivity in shale gas and shale gas drilling waste. The most radioactive waste material are the drill cuttings from the horizontal (shale) section of a well. Since the shale is the most radioactive sedimentary layer, the horizontal section basically mines radioactive material. Disposing of radioactive drill cuttings can be particularly problematic. At a conventional well - where the cuttings are not from radioactive shale - … [Read more...] about Shale Gas Radioactivity

Our pal Rachel Treichler is an environmental lawyer and a pretty cool hand on a hot topic: radioactive frackwaste. Since the Marcellus Shale is particularly rich in radioactive material, getting rid of it has become a quite a challenge - in some cases, amounting to a black market in contraband frackwaste. Or shipping it all the way across the continental United States to Idafrackingho. When the frackers are unable to dump it illegally in a local wastewater treatment plant. Out West, they just … [Read more...] about Radioactive Frackwaste ? Call The Rachel !
From Rachel Treichler, the attorney who challenged a frack water takeover in New York by a Pennsylvania fracker - without getting regulatory approval to ship New York water to Pa. to be turned into radioactive, toxic poison across the border. The fracker thought they would not get caught taking the water. Until Rachel and the Sierra Club happened along. Kind of the Upstate version of the movie "Chinatown." Except this attempted cross-border water grab was real March 26, 2013 Judge Enjoins … [Read more...] about NY Judge Tells Pa. Frackers: This Ain’t “Chinatown”
The frackers re-wrote the New York state water withdrawal regulations with a big fracking loophole that will enable them to take massive amounts of water for free. They can get 100,000 gallons a day - no questions asked - free. And so, if they get say 10 subcontractors, that's 1,000,000 gallons a day from the state - for nothing. We wrote about it at the time. What did the environmental NGOs in NYS do about it ? They helped get the regulations passed. Loophole and all. The loophole is so … [Read more...] about Free Fracking Water
Mike Bernhard sent out some thought-provoking comments on how a blanket moratorium extension on all drilling (if one even got out of committee in the state senate) might cloud the picture of force majeure claims in New York - since the extension bill would expand the moratorium to include vertical low permeability formations - probably because the only way to economically produce such wells would be to frack them horizontally, so a vertical shale well would in all likelihood be a test well for a … [Read more...] about Moratorium Extension as Lease Extender ?
The Rachel sent this along about how the state basically gives water away - for free - no permit, no nothing - for up to 100,000 gallons a day - per user. Coming from where I do, why anybody would give water away simply baffles me. The enabling legislation was passed unanimously after the Major Environmental NGOs said giving water away was an inspired idea. For private golf courses, power plants, frackers, hog factories, and other Corporate Personages. Who donate to political campaigns. And … [Read more...] about The Great Frack Water Giveaway
First the environmental NGOs - the Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Frauds, Environmental Advocates, etc. helped New York pass its "free frack water" program- up to 100,000 gallons a day per applicant - at no cost, for ever, no questions asked. Thanks NGOs, with you on the job, who needs fracking lobbyists ? Now one of those NGOs, the Sierra Club, has woken up to the fact that maybe free water - no questions asked - was not such a great idea after all. So now they are suing the DEC to block … [Read more...] about “Free Frack Water” Program First Lawsuit
Battle Over Flaming Water and Fracking Reignites As Analysis Prompts Call for Renewed EPA Investigation At the heart of the international controversy over fracking has been the contention that the oil and gas drilling technique can contaminate people's drinking water, sometimes even causing it to light on fire. One poster child for this claim has been Steven Lipsky, a Texas homeowner who has appeared in a viral video with a garden hose spewing flames and says his water was … [Read more...] about The Horrible Fracking Truth Revealed! Imported fresh daily from Fracksylvania. Where they appear to have an infinite supply of the stuff. Post Frack-Ban Impacts on New York's Water Resources Three months ago, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a ban on high-volume hydraulic fracturing in the state of New York. So – at least for now - contamination from active drilling is off the table. But there are other ways that hydrofracking puts New York’s water resources at risk. Steve Penningroth, director of the Community Science Institute … [Read more...] about After Frack “Ban” New York Awash in Frack Filth
CORRECTIONS to yesterday’s post from readers, and thanks for your comments: Rocky Mountain northern front range rain (east of the continental divide) travels up the South Platte to the Platte to the Missouri to the Mississippi and finally to the Gulf of Mexico. Weld county, the hub of the DJ Basin, flood water would go east via the Platte. Given the droughts in western Nebraska, I’m not sure how far exactly the water will go and if it will ever make it. Any rain falling near Colorado Springs … [Read more...] about COLORADO KOOLAID UPDATE
