Groundswell Rising, Protecting Our Children’s Air And Water, the new documentary from Emmy Award-winning Resolution Pictures, captures the passion of people engaged in a David and Goliath confrontation. They stand together, challenging a system that promotes profit over health. We meet mothers, fathers, scientists, doctors, farmers and people from all sides of the political spectrum taking a hard look at energy extraction techniques not proven to be safe. With the Oil and Gas industry’s expansion of fracking seen as a moral issue, this provocative documentary tracks a people’s movement, a groundswell rising towards reason and sensitivity, to protect life, today and tomorrow.
Groundswell Rising will get your blood going and your mind racing about how we can pull together to defend our communities from gas drilling and its crushing infrastructure.
-Tracy Carluccio, Deputy Director, Delaware Riverkeeper Network
“No kidding this is a groundswell, and just in time! Fracking means big money to a few, which is why its spreading around the world–but the opposition from the rest of us is spreading just as fast, and this powerful film shows exactly why!”
-Bill McKibben, Founder of 350.org
Groundswell Rising, Protecting Our Children’s Air and Water brings us into the lives of people from all walks of life and all sides of the political spectrum who are dedicating themselves to resisting, slowing down or stopping fracking.
We meet parents, scientists, artists, teachers, clergy, community organizers and business leaders who are convinced that this unproven form of gas extraction is a serious health and environmental risk. Driven by a deep moral conviction, we see how they are standing up to one of the world’s most powerful industries.
The film takes us back to the groundswells of the past such as the civil rights movement, women’s rights, the denormalization of cigarette smoking, and the environmental movement, for connection and inspiration. And looking forward we see how the resistance to fracking is part of a growing movement towards dealing with climate change and making the transition to sustainable energy. The notion that burning more fossil fuels as a bridge to a cleaner planet is explored.
We will see how an industry rich with political connections managed to slip into a position of almost untouchable power and how at-risk communities have come together to fight back. And we will see how not protecting the cyclical flow of air and water puts us all at risk, no matter where we live.
Groundswell Rising is a story told by those who are living it, with honesty, passion and a sincere desire to protect our children and the world we leave them.
How many children need to get sick? How long do we threaten our air, water and sanctity of life before the alarms are heeded?
“Besides the incredible information on fracking’s detriment to our health it is also a great look into what it is like to live in a town with fracking in the backyard. This film should be watched by everyone on the side of industry and those considering leasing their land to the gas companies. Plain and simply, it’s the human side of this debate”. -Mark Ruffalo
